How to Properly File a Tax Return in the United States
When it comes to filing a tax return when you live in the United States, there are a few different options available to you. You may prepare and file your return online (E-File), you may pay a tax preparer and have them E-File the return for you, and you may also mail the return to the IRS. Whether you file a return online or through the mail there are things you should make sure are completed before sending your return in to the IRS for acceptance.
Step 1
Figure out your numbers
The first step in filing a tax return is to have your taxes figured. Find out exactly how much you owe the IRS or how much you will be getting back. Keep in mind that the United States Government has set a deadline for filing your return of April 15th. It is vitally important that you either file or request an extension at the very latest by the April 15th.
Step 2
Choose a method to file taxes
The next step it to decide on a method to file your taxes and to actually sign and file them. You may mail your return or may pay to E-File it at many different locations. If you choose to mail the tax return you must do so by the 15th of April. Make sure all the documents needed are included, then sign, and mail your return to the IRS location that processes tax returns for your state. If you had your taxes prepared or prepared them online yourself, chances are you are going to E-file them. Again, make sure to print out all pages of your return and to make sure you sign it and return it to the IRS by April 15th.
Clearly there are options available to you as to how you wish to file your tax return in the United States. However, which ever option you do choose, it is very important that you make sure everything is completed and mailed by the 15th of April so you do not incur any penalties associated with late filing. If your taxes are not complete and you do need more time make sure to request the extension in plenty of time. Whether you file electronically or by mail, the two most important steps to filing your tax return is to make sure all necessary documents are signed and that they are postmarked no later than April 15th. Now that you know how to file the return, pick the option that suits your needs and avoid any problems with the IRS, file on time.
